Q Why choose the Bowen Technique...?...The Bowen Technique is a gentle, subtle and relaxing hands-on treatment for a wide range of conditions. It is suitable for adults, children - including babies - and the elderly.
Q I haven't experienced the Bowen Technique before, what is it?
...the Bowen Technique aims to balance the whole person not just the symptoms and encourages re-alignment of the body. The Bowen moves or procedures are carried out on the client's body by applying the thumbs or fingers in precise, rolling type moves over the muscles and soft tissue. There is no manipulation or hard tissue and no force is used or needed.
If you would like to know more, take a look at the presentation below (produced by the BTER)...
Q Why would the Bowen Technique be good for me?
...it is believed that the Bowen Technique can offer relief from conditions or presenting symptoms related to:
- Migraine and headaches
- Back and neck pain
- Sciatica and back pain
- Knee problems
- Sports injuries - chronic & acute
- Repetitive Strain Injury
- Frozen shoulder
- Tennis/Golfer's elbow
- Subfertility
- Respiratory problems including asthma & hayfever
- Infant colic
- Digestive problems
... and many more
Why not read both Bear Grylls' & Jerome Flynn's experience of Bowen Technique - just "google" it!
Q I've booked my first Bowen treatment, what can I expect?
... You can expect the first session to last about 45 minutes. A detailed medical and lifestyle consultation will be followed by a Bowen treatment on a treatment table. You will not need to remove any clothing (it is advisable to wear light clothing; t-shirts, jogging bottoms or similar - no jeans please as it is diffcult to work on the body through heavy denim).
Q I've heard that there are short breaks throughout the treatment - why is this?
... There are a series of short breaks during each treatment where the patient is left resting to allow their body to respond to the moves that have already been performed.
Q Can I have other therapies whilst I am having a course of Bowen treatments?
... No, it is recommended, in order to receive maximum benefit, that other physical therapies are not mixed with the Bowen Techniqe - for example reflexology, massage or physiotherapy. Bach & Busch Flowers & Homeopathy are fine to mix with Bowen.
Q Will I experience any discomfort during the treatment?
... Depending on your presenting symptoms - if for example you have a sports injury and you are already in some pain, you may well feel some discomfort during the treatment. After a Bowen treatment most clients will leave the clinic feeling exactly the same as when they arrived - for most people the healing and adjustments will take place in the following 7 days when most twinges, aches etc are experienced.
Q How will I feel after the treatment?
... As mentioned above, most people leave initially feeling exactly the same as when they arrived. Treatments are spaced 7-10 days apart and most people report various reactions during this time - namely flu-like symptoms, aches, pains, loosening up, walking straighter, "something odd happening", "felt like you were still treating me", sleeping deeper/sounder etc.
Q How many treatments will I need?
... Usually 3-4 treatments depending on how long the presenting symptoms have been a problem. Some clients choose to continue after the initial treatments with monthly maintenance top-ups, others book in a treatment when they feel they need it.

"I discovered Janet's website when searching for treatment for painful sciatica from which I had been suffering for several weeks. Janet recommended treatment with the Bowen Technique. The treatment involves very gentle manipulation of muscles over the whole body and not just the affected areas. It is non-invasive and very relaxing and after six sessions of about 30 minutes each I am virtually free of symptoms, and also enjoying the welcome further benefits of increased flexibility and improved quality of sleep." (DI Beaconsfield)
"I cannot praise Janet and Bowen Technique enough! I arrived at her door aching and miserable and within a couple of days of my first treatment my sciatic pain had disappeared, I could breathe for the first time in weeks, and six treatments later I was feeling brand new. I was astounded by the results and recommend this treatment to anyone who is in pain." (MC Chesham)
"I came to Janet for Bowen Technique after suffering with a back problem for about a year. I had difficulty and pain in most every day activities but it was especially painful & restrictive when lying down, getting up & bending. Being normally very active this was extremely frustrating. Prior to seeing Janet, I had been receiving treatment from a chiropractor for over 6 months but this made only very occasional and short lived improvements to my problem (and was very painful!). I was starting to fear that I would never be rid of my complaint and this was really getting me down.
Bowen is a relaxing and very gentle treatment that may even leave you wondering how on earth it can work. But after my second treatment I felt better than I had since the start of my problem. From then on there were improvements following each treatment and my visits reduced to once a month until amazingly I was good as new! Not only did Bowen help my physical condition but after each treatment I also noticed that I just felt good!
I honestly thought that my back problem was going to be a long-term issue and I am so grateful to Janet for fixing me. To this day my back is still good, strong & problem free. I am back to my normal active life of cycling, walking & horse riding with no problems at all & I can now leap out of bed instead of taking many slow painful minutes. I recently returned from a 6 month trip travelling Europe and will be back for some top-up Bowen as a 'feel good' treatment and maybe some reflexology...She does that very well too! :) (KL Amersham)
